The Comparative Democratic Studies Unit (Uni-CDS) of the University of Nicosia holds an evening of talks in Nicosia on how a democracy protects its institutions, freedoms and political pluralism against anti-democratic forces.
Speakers:
- Achilles C. Emilianides, Dean of the School of Law and President of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts — militant democracy as a constitutional question;
- Philippa Chatzistavrou, Associate Professor at Panteion University — the mechanisms of democratic backsliding and the role of parties, institutions and civil society in resisting them;
- Christos Hadjiioannou, philosophy lecturer at the University of Nicosia — the paradox of tolerance and the ethical dilemmas of democratic self-defence.
The event takes place in room M114 of the Millenium Building (1st floor), lasts an hour and a half and is held in Greek.
