Girls/Museum: Final Film Screening & Discussion
Join us for the concluding event of the "Questions of her Own" screening series at the Goethe-Institut Cyprus. We'll be showing Shelley Silver's acclaimed documentary "Girls/Museum," which won the Best Documentary Film award at Duisburg Film Week.
Following the screening, engage in a thought-provoking discussion with art theorist Evagoras Vanesis and multidisciplinary artist Melita Kuta. The conversation will delve into the film's themes and its connection to the Cypriot context.
About the Film
The film takes viewers on a unique journey through the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig. Director Shelley Silver invited a group of girls and young women, aged 7 to 19, to share their perspectives on classical artworks—paintings and sculptures created by men throughout history.
Key Themes Explored
- The Female Gaze: Discover how the young participants interpret the portrayal of women in art, often depicted as objects of beauty, victims, or mothers, and how these representations resonate with their own experiences.
- Deconstructing the Classics: Witness how these young female viewers pose direct and sometimes challenging questions about art, history, and gender roles, transforming the museum space into a vibrant forum for dialogue.
- Coming of Age: The film beautifully captures the development of critical thinking within a new generation as they engage with art and its societal implications.
This project is supported by Phytorio, an association of visual artists and art theorists, and is part of the KunstRaumGoethe exhibition "Between Imagination and Hope" (April 17 – June 5, 2026).
Admission is free. The film will be shown in German with English subtitles, and the discussion will be held in English.
