21S is a live, improvised audiovisual performance by Cypriot-Dominican artist Emiddio Vasquez with drummer Stelios Antoniou and Elvin Brandhi on vocals, presented at Rialto Theatre in Limassol as part of the Flash Art Festival.
The piece revisits the psychogeography of Ayia Napa, once the epicentre of UK Garage. Pulverised breakbeats, bat recordings, very-low-frequency whistlers and gestural interference expose the uneasy overlap of club culture and militarism, while AI-generated visual noise and early-2000s artefacts call up the old club strip. Antoniou's drum kit is fitted with sensors that trigger sound and image, and Brandhi, a cult musician and lyricist, dissolves the coded language of UK Garage even further.
21S was first commissioned and premiered at CTM Festival in its Radio Lab programme. Vasquez, founder of the label Moneda and a long-time organiser and DJ in the Cypriot underground, co-represented Cyprus at the 60th Venice Biennale with Peter Eramian as Lower Levant Company; Antoniou is a Paralimni-based percussionist, improviser and educator. The performance lasts 40 minutes; a €30 festival pass is also available.
