Tsar Saltan, who has stopped to stay at a village house, falls in love with the lovely, kind, and simple girl Annushka. Annushka marries the tsar and bears him a son. Her sisters and stepmother are lucky enough to find themselves in the tsar's palace, as if by magic, following Annushka. But the sisters and stepmother do not appreciate their happiness, want more, and start scheming.

While Saltan is away, they replace a letter and make Annushka and the newborn heir look bad in front of the tsar. Sultan is furious, but orders them to wait for his return. However, the letter with his orders is replaced again. As a result, the queen and her son are sealed in a barrel and thrown into the ocean to certain death.
