Book club meeting: Americanah

The upcoming fiction meeting will feature a discussion of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel Americanah.

The novel is about how an educated person from the "second world" feels when they find themselves in the US or London, and what awaits them at home if they decide to return. As teenagers, Ifemelu and Obinze fell in love, and they didn't care about the dictatorship in their home country or the ominous atmosphere of general oppression and fear. But after graduating from school, the beautiful Ifemelu left to study in America, where a new world full of both joys and problems awaited her. The sensible Obinze, from a family of professors, was going to follow his beloved, but the events of September 11 put an end to his plans to move to America. He ends up in London, where he leads a dangerous life as an illegal immigrant. Years pass, and now Obinze is a wealthy man, living in his native country, where he is valued and respected. Ifeoluwa has become a successful journalist, and her blog about the life of an immigrant in America is extremely popular. It would seem that everything is going well for both of them, but this is only the beginning... This fascinating, bitter, and at times funny novel, spanning three continents and many destinies, brings to mind Adichie's previous novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, as well as Khaled Hosseini's And the Mountains Echoed and Abraham Verghese's Cutting for Stone. Perhaps the main theme of this novel is how our perception of homeland and home lives and changes within us, and the nuances of partings and returns. (c)
